New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) The Home Ministry today pulled up some forest officials posted in Naxalite-affected areas for allegedly not alerting local police about"happenings"there and even attending meetings organised by the Maoists.
"The forest officials being close to the tribal areas know what is happening in the forests. They can alert us (police) about what is happening in the field.
"But this is not happening,"Home Secretary G K Pillai said at a national conference here on forestry administration in left-wing extremism affected areas.
Addressing the 35 District Forest Officials (DFOs) from various Naxailite-hit regions across the country, Pillai rued that even as Maoists were setting up base in jungles, gathering arms, forest officials"do not cooperate"in giving the required information………………………………..

It may be recalled that several Maoist outfits have reckoned the jungles as a safe hide out for their anti-establishment crusade. Frequently, the ultras have attacked outposts of Forest Department, causing extensive damage to life and property.
Amidst all these trends, the wildlife has become a victim of during the exchange of fire between security personnel and the rebels hiding in the jungles.
Tiger Conservation Fund Set Up To Help Local Communities
The ministry of environment and forests has set up a Tiger Conservation Fund to benefit local communities living in the forest reserves. A fund of Rs 900 crores will be transferred yearly to states in which the 39 tiger reserves are located to be used for livelihood activities.
“While the Jim Corbett National Park would receive Rs 3 crores to be transferred to the Uttarakhand state government, Rs 4 crores would be transferred to the Kanha Park to be used by the Madhya Pradesh state government,” environment minister Jairam Ramesh said. “The state governments at present had no stake in Project Tiger. The big challenge facing the Centre was to give them a stake in this project,” he said.
“Already 400 youth belonging to the Chenchu tribe had been recruited as forest guards in the Nagarjungsagar tiger reserve while 50 Ban Gujjar youth had been recruited in the Corbett reserve and similar steps been taken in the Nilgiri reserve also,” he claimed…………………………..

C-DAC develops 'Aranya' for wildlife, forest management

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is working on developing a tool called 'Aranya' with an aim to tackle problems like poaching, tree-cutting and exploring potential areas suitable for forestry based carbon credit generation.
This support system is being developed by the Geomatics Solutions Development Group (GSDG) of C-DAC, which is a scientific society of the Central Ministry of Communication and Information Technology entrusted with providing IT based solutions in various spheres. This system will give forest departments first hand information regarding their areas of supervision in a detailed manner and will be helpful in taking well-informed decisions in different areas of forest management………………………………………

Woman in khaki protects Assam forest
Dressed in the trademark khaki uniform of frontline staff, she patrols in an Assam jungle with her other colleagues, ready to fight any threat, for facing the challenges of protecting forest, conservation of animals.About one year back, Saya Rani Das, a 28-year-old girl, decided to join Assam’s Department of Environment and Forests to serve as its frontline staff; her passion being the wildlife.
Completing postgraduation in English, Saya joined as a forester in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary as the part of Assam Forest Departments decision to recruit 30 percent women as frontline staff.”I instantly decided to grab this opportunity,” Saya said.Saya further said, ”There are many challenges for us, but we are ready to fight any threat for protecting the forest and animals.””I am determined to prove myself as a good frontline staff,” she said.At present 21 women foresters and 35 women forest guards are working in different wildlife divisions across the state…………….

Development plans in Maoist districts to be revised: Chidambaram

Admitting that the government's developmental plans were not delivering desired results in impoverished tribal regions of east and central India, Home Minister P Chidambaram on Saturday said financial aid of nearly Rs.14,000 crore would be approved soon for Maoist-affected districts. The homeminister also hinted at a change in the manner in which the central government released money for development programmes to the states affected by Maoist insurgency.
The Integrated Action Plan for Infrastructural Development worth Rs.13,742 crore for Maoist-hit districts would be finalised soon, Chidambaram said, speaking at a conference on forestry administration in left-wing extremism affected areas. The plan spread over a period of three years is aimed at improving facilities like drinking water, electricity, roads, sanitation and health services. "Initially, 35 Left wing extremist-affected districts will be given Rs 45-50 crore for setting up………………….

Tussle over TATR field director post ends

The tussle between two senior forest officers over the post of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) Field Director ended on Friday with Sanjay Thakre, who had been transferred to the Forest Development Corporation of India (FDCM), handing over charge to V K Sinha.
Thakre had refused to hand over charge saying his transfer has been stayed by the government. Without any written document to back his claim, Sinha proceeded to take charge unilaterally and Thakre promptly locked the office the next day. Head of the Forest Force (HoFF) Alok Joshi had, while talking to The Indian Express earlier, said, “it was wrong of Sinha to have taken charge. Thakre’s transfer has been stayed by the government and the written order is expected shortly.”
But on Thursday, Joshi took a U-turn and issued a directive asking Thakre to hand over charge to Sinha. Thakre, however, reported sick. The drama finally ended with Thakre handing over charge. After that, Thakre was given a farewell. When how he had turned the story of the reported stay on Thakre’s transfer on its head, Joshi told The Indian Express: “That chapter is over. It’s a government decision.”
